The problem is spammers create Gmail addresses, they then use this to sign up here, our server sends an email to verify addresses, and Google then treats the verification message as spam. Google then downgrades Packetizer's email reputation, thus preventing us from sending normal email to Gmail users.

Nobody else does this to verification messages, so use any other address when signing up other than Gmail.
paulejGoogle rejecting mail due to bad domain reputationhttps://forums.packetizer.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1423&p=2851#p28512020-01-18T02:48:30Z2020-01-18T02:48:30Z
Folks,

Packetizer has existed now nearly 20 years. It's hard to believe, but next month marks the 20 year old mark! During those years, we've run Google Adsense ads to help support our community-oriented web site. We've been in touch with folks at Google. We're very much known to Google. They probably know more about us than we do ourselves.

Also over those years, we've battled spam endlessly. A large portion of the spam we've received over the years has been sent to us via Google's servers (mostly Gmail abusers). We take that abuse and filter it as best we can. Much of it does get filtered out, but some does still end up in mailboxes.

Given our long history with Google and Google's position as one of the biggest spam sources on the Internet, you'd think they might be somewhat forgiving when one of our users screws up. Nope. No such luck.

Sadly, one of our users had her email password stolen. Spammers took full advantage of her email account to send at least 38,000 email messages through our mail server over the course of a few hours before it was detected and stopped. Once detected, we immediately addressed the problem. No more spam. We hate spam. But, too late. Google's system decided that, due to that occurrence of spam (at the hands of people flagrantly violating the law), our domain was to be listed as having a bad reputation. Gmail users can still send us spam, of course, but we cannot even reply to individuals using gmail if they have a question.

There appears to be absolutely nothing we can do about it, either.

And so we've decided that two can play this game. We're just going to block mail from Gmail (and anyone sending through Google's servers) to our support address and selected other addresses since we can't even reply, anyway. After all, it's better to inform senders that they aren't getting a reply than to leave them wondering!

It's truly sad when a giant like Google can wield so much power. It's even worse when it's abused.

The biggest issue has just been the cost of a certificate. Yes, there are free certificates out there, but those require more manual effort. And while one can argue that a $6 certificate isn't that expensive, we have lots of domains and sub-domains. It starts to add up after a while.

I'm hoping that Let's Encrypt will solve the cost and administration issues.
justingHTTPS on forumhttps://forums.packetizer.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=602&p=1740#p17402015-11-15T02:51:43Z2015-11-15T02:51:43Z
Hello!

Really enjoying AESCrypt, and I look forward to meeting the community on here!
Pure curiousity, will the packetizer forums get HTTPS any time soon? It seems most other packetizer services are HTTPS enabled. It would be a nice feature to have on the fourms as well to protect user login information.

Just my suggestion :D And thank you to the community for making a great program like AESCrypt!
paulejOpenID Support to be Removedhttps://forums.packetizer.com/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=525&p=1489#p14892015-01-09T17:16:02Z2015-01-09T17:16:02Z
As much as I hate to do it, I will be removing OpenID 2.0 support from Packetizer Forums over the summer 2015. If you run your own phpBB board, you might also want to add OpenID Support to your site:
http://www.zenorsoft.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=841

<s>[i]</s>(Please be advised that the software from Zenorsoft uses an OpenID library from JanRain that does not work with PHP 5.3. To work around that issue, replace the "Auth" library with this one: http://sourcecookbook.com/en/recipes/60/janrain-s-php-openid-library-fixed-for-php-5-3-and-how-i-did-it)
And if you wish to operate your open OpenID server, you might consider downloading software that easily lets you do so:
This looks like a very impressive device. If you've not had a chance to play with other Android devices, you really ought to visit your local wireless store and do that. I think Google is setting the stage for a significant shift step forward in terms of what we can do with mobile devices.

Apple has had a good run and, quite frankly, I think they're going to be forced to make some changes in order to compete against the forthcoming Android devices. Knowing Apple, I'm sure they've got something planned.

In any case, this device really looks cool.
Further, I continue to see a lot of questions asking questions on open source projects. So, I think there is a need. As such, I created the sub-category. We will see how it goes, but I hope that people will find it useful. Paul
paulejRe: Avaya, Nortel, and Skypehttps://forums.packetizer.com/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=19&p=41#p412009-09-28T15:44:51Z2009-09-28T15:44:51Z
My personal opinion that the Avaya/Nortel merger is a bad idea. There are some good products and engineers on both sides, but the fact is that they compete directly with each other. How can two companies struggling to make a profit bring together overlapping product portfolios and then expect to do better? The only rationale that makes sense to me is that they're removing a major competitor from the market.

The Skype element is really interesting. They would not necessarily have to merge the Skype technology with the Avaya/Nortel products, but work to ensure that the SIP trunk offered by Skype works flawlessly with their equipment. They would also need to have extremely favorable pricing. In that way, every customer can be offered an option to bypass the incumbent carrier with some very attractive prices.

Perhaps the days when an enterprise is charged a high monthly "line charge" for every incoming line are over?
mattRe: Avaya, Nortel, and Skypehttps://forums.packetizer.com/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=19&p=40#p402009-09-25T15:25:11Z2009-09-25T15:25:11Z
The path of least resistance says that it only appears interesting on the surface, and that the investment firm is simply broadening its industry portfolio. I'm inclined to believe that, given the amount of effort it would take to coordinate those three disparate companies.

That said, it seems like it could be a conscious effort to get an early position into the Google Voice competitive space. I'm not exactly sure what the play would be, but I'm thinking something like selling hard phones which integrate deeply with Skype and are supported by call centers?
paulejSpam and idiotic spam preventionhttps://forums.packetizer.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=22&p=39#p392009-09-25T02:03:38Z2009-09-25T02:03:38Z
Folks,

Earlier today, I tried sending a message to the H.323 Announce list to let everybody know about the potential new work in the H.323 Forum on "Open Community Specifications" (or whatever this might be called). I sent out the message and, little did I know, but our server was blacklisted on UCE PROTECT's mail server (<s></s>full details).

Sadly, about 20 subscribers got kicked off the H.323 Announce list, because of this blacklisting problem.

If your employer or service provider is using UCE PROTECT, may I suggest you encourage them to stop. I've made every effort to try to reason with those folks, but it appears they're not willing to change their policies.

I can only apologize to those who got kicked off the list, but there was absolutely nothing I could do about it.
paulejAvaya, Nortel, and Skypehttps://forums.packetizer.com/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=19&p=34#p342009-09-16T03:22:33Z2009-09-16T03:22:33Z
Folks,

For those of us in the industry, it is hard to ignore the fact that Avaya, Nortel's enterprise telephony business, and Skype will all be controlled (directly or indirectly) by the investment firm Silver Lake. See this:
http://www.dailypayload.com/content/3274

Do you think they plan to play strongly both as an equipment provider and as a carrier, or are these really disjoint efforts that just look really interesting on the surface?

For example, have a forum that reads "Open Source Projects" and then when you click on that, it would lead you to a set of additional forums, one for each of the various projects folks suggest to add, which might be for things like OpenMCU, H323Plus, GnuGK, Kamailio (formerly OpenSER), etc.

Take the poll and/or feel free to post a comment.

I have been working in the VoIP, videoconferencing, and data conferencing space for a very long time now, working on implementations, solutions, and standardization of protocols. As a part of my job and through the standardization activities I have led, I have engaged with engineers, marketing folks, and management teams in companies all over the globe.

Back in 2000, <s></s>Paul Long and I created <s></s>Packetizer as a community-oriented web site to help provide needed information to those who are implementing or deploying VoIP and videoconferencing equipment. Packetizer started as a small site, but it has grown substantially over the years in terms of the amount and type of information that is published. That said, the purpose of Packetizer is unchanged.

Notwithstanding our efforts, what we noticed is that people still have lots of questions that they need to have answered and questions get asked to a variety of mailing lists and, sometimes, that list is not necessarily the best one. There was no "one place" to go to get answers, or to get answers from a reputable source in some cases. People want to get answers from the experts, which include those who are writing protocol specifications, implementing protocols, building products, and deploying products.

So recognizing this need, I decided to ask the Packetizer community at large (and folks on mailing lists not managed by Packetizer) what they would like. In a poll, the majority were in favor of creating a message board. And so, we introduce Packetizer Forums.

To address people's wants and needs, we did the following:
<LIST><s>
</s>

<s>
</s>We tried to divide the site logically, but we will certainly welcome any input on structure or content areas

<s>
</s>We incorporated ATOM and RSS support so you need not visit the site everyday to see if there is a topic of interest: you can pull that information directly via your favorite ATOM/RSS new reader

<s>
</s>We enabled the ability to subscribe to forums through email notifications

<s>
</s>We tried to cover everything under the sun and, yes, there is definitely somebody in the Packetizer community who has some experience with all of these topics
</LIST>
We hope you will find Packetizer Forums useful. As time progresses, we will be able to gauge how successful it is by the volume of traffic, number of postings, and so forth. Do not be shy to be the first person to post into a given forum. We have to start somewhere!
